Start from what you're trying to say.

Most Korean courses are ordered by grammar. This one is ordered by intention — because in Korean, the same intention becomes a completely different sentence depending on who is listening.

Here is the problem no vocabulary list solves. You want to turn down an invitation. In English that is one skill: you learn "Sorry, I can't make it," and you are done — you can say it to your roommate, a stranger, your manager, and your friend's grandmother. The sentence does not change. Only your tone does.

Korean does not work that way. Refusing a close friend, refusing a stranger on the street, refusing your team lead, and refusing an elder who is pushing a third helping of food onto your plate are four different sentences built on four different strategies. Use the wrong one and you do not sound slightly off — you sound cold, or servile, or like you are picking a fight. Learners hit this wall constantly, and a dictionary cannot warn you about it, because the problem was never the words.

So this section is built on two axes. Down the side: what you are trying to do. Across the top: who you are saying it to — four rungs, from the friend you can be blunt with to the elder you have to be indirect with. That second axis is the real difficulty ladder in Korean, and it comes from the language itself, not from a textbook's chapter order.

Each cell is one short lesson: four or five real expressions, ranked, with the thing no textbook prints — what each one actually does to the person hearing it.
